Pictographs are an evidence-aligned mnemonic for beginning readers. Unlike materials that place a picture beside a letter, pictographs embed the image within the letter itself. This approach helps children learn letter-sound relationships more effectively because the visual cue is inseparable from the letter it represents.

Each card covers a consonant or short vowel. Students learn each pictograph using a consistent three-step routine: say the letter name, say the keyword built into the letter, say the sound. The cards can be used to introduce letter sounds to the whole class, in small-group lessons, and for quick review drills, or placed in students’ hands so they can use them independently when they need a sound reminder.
